Volleyball Defeated by Loyola Maryland In Four Sets

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Holy Cross volleyball team at outside hitter with 19 kills (.242 hitting percentage), and a tied team lead of 14 digs, as the Crusaders dropped a 3-1 decision to Loyola Maryland at the Holy Cross Field House in Patriot League action on Friday night.


  • Sifferlen has posted double-digit kills in 30 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 24 of 25 matches.
  • With her 19 kills and 14 digs, Sifferlen recorded her ninth double-double of the season and 28th of her career.
  • Webb tallied her ninth career double-double with 32 assists and 13 digs.
  • With her three blocks tonight, junior middle hitter Mary Mullen now ranks sixth all-time in the program’s history with 210 career blocks.


  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner posted 14 digs to share the team lead with Sifferlen.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb tallied 32 assists for the team lead, as Mullen’s three blocks were a team-best at the net.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Lynsey Petersen led the team with four service aces.
  • The Greyhounds were led in kills by Ann Ernst, who recorded 18 kills and 10 digs. In the front row, Corri Waters logged six blocks, while Erin Cunningham led Loyola (Md.) with 18 digs.


  • Down 7-1 in the first set, the Crusaders battled back to trim the deficit to one point with the score 11-10. The Greyhounds then won eight of the next 10 points to take a 19-12 advantage. After a Holy Cross timeout, the Crusaders answered with nine of the following 12 points to once again get within one point with the score 22-21, as Sifferlen led the way with two kills and Petersen notched a pair of service aces during the span. Loyola (Md.) won three of the final five points to take set one, 25-23.
  • The Greyhounds started the second set strong, holding a three-point lead before the Crusaders battled back to tie the set at 8-8. Holy Cross then won nine of the next 12 points to take a 17-11 lead with sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares notching two kills during the run. Loyola (Md.) would trim the deficit to four points but get no closer, as the Crusaders took the second set, 25-17.
  • The third set was fought hard by each side, and remained close with both teams battling to maintain a three-point margin. Tied at 24-24, Holy Cross took a set-point advantage, but Loyola (Md.) went on to win five of the final seven points for the 29-27 third set victory.
  • Trailing by two points in the fourth set, the Greyhounds extended their lead, winning six of the next eight points to stretch out to an 18-12 advantage. The Crusaders got within five points, but couldn’t close the gap, as Loyola (Md.) won the fourth set, 25-17, securing the 3-1 match victory.


  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 1,267 career digs. She needs 18 more digs to be third all-time and 46 digs to set a
  • Sifferlen has 1,098 career kills, which are third all-time in the program’s history. She needs 148 more kills to rank second all-time.
  • Magner has 832 career digs and is 61 digs away from being 10th all-time in the school’s history.


  • The Holy Cross volleyball team will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative, which works towards raising funds for breast cancer research and supporting people with the disease.
  • At the match versus American on Saturday, Oct. 1, fans will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win autographed memorabilia by United States men’s national volleyball team member Matt Anderson. Prizes include t-shirts, a pink volleyball and several photographs signed by Anderson. Three raffles will take place between sets two and three with each selected winner receiving two of the memorabilia items.
  • Starting at 3:05 p.m., tickets can be purchased for $5 at the marketing table upon attending the match with all proceeds going towards Dig Pink’s mission. Winners must be present in the stands between sets two and three to receive their prizes.
