Volleyball Falls To American

The Lead: Sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville led the Holy Cross volleyball team with a career-best seven blocks,  but the Crusaders were defeated by American in three sets at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen has posted double-digit kills in 31 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 25 of 26 matches.
  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen now has 214 career blocks, which ranks fourth all-time in the program’s history.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares tallied her 100th career kill and has 103 total kills this season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sifferlen led the team at outside hitter with 18 kills (.283 hitting percentage).
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner posted 18 digs for the team lead in the back row.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb tallied a team-best 26 assists.
  • The Eagles notched a .235 team hitting percentage. Leading American with 13 kills (.393 hitting percentage) and 14 digs was Shannon Webb, while Vela McBride posted five blocks at the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set stayed close up until American tallied three straight points to take a 17-14 advantage. The Crusaders battled back, winning five of the next six points to lead by one with the score at 19-18. Soares, Sifferlen and Somerville each recorded a kill during the span. Holy Cross would score only once more though, as American took set one, 25-20.
  • The Crusaders began the second set strong, holding a 6-3 lead. The Eagles then notched 12 of the following 15 points to move ahead to a 15-9 advantage. Holy Cross would trim the deficit to four points but get no closer, as American won the second set, 25-19.
  • Trailing 8-5 to start the third set, the Crusaders won five of the next six points to take a 10-9 lead with Sifferlen delivering two powerful kills during the run. The score would remain within a three-point margin, as American led the way. Tied at 19-19, the Eagles took six of the final eight points to win the third set, 25-21.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS

  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 1,269 career digs. She needs 16 more digs to be third all-time and 44 digs to set a new school record.
  • Sifferlen has 1,116 career kills, which are third all-time in the program’s history. She needs 130 more kills to rank second all-time.
  • Magner has 850 career digs and is 43 digs away from being 10th all-time in the school’s history.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross will compete on the road for the next eight matches, starting with Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m., followed by Navy on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
