HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Holy Cross entered the court strong with 4-3 lead in the first set before tallying four straight points to move ahead by five with the score, 8-3. The Bison took the next four points, but Holy Cross battled back to hold the lead by at least a one-point margin until Bucknell tied the set at 12-12. The score remained close from there until the Crusaders won eight of the last 12 points, fueled by a pair of kills from sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares to take set one, 25-22.
  • Holy Cross carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 8-4 lead. The Bison then closed the gap to one point before winning the following seven of 10 points to take a 14-12 advantage. The deficit would remain within one point until the Crusaders used a 6-2 surge to stretch out to a 23-19 lead. Soares registered two kills during this run. Bucknell got within two but no closer, as the Crusaders notched the final two points with junior middle hitter Mary Mullen and freshman setter Lizzie Webb teaming up for a block on the winning point to take set two, 25-22, entering the locker room with a 2-0 match advantage.
  • Trailing 7-3 to start off the third set, the Crusaders rallied back to win 12 of the next 20 points to tie the set at 15-15 with Soares and senior co-captain outside hitter Mandy Sifferlen leading the charge for a combined four kills. The set stayed close for the following 10 points until it was tied at 20-20. The Crusaders then took three straight points to move out to a 23-20 lead.
