Volleyball Falls To Colgate

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Holy Cross volleyball team with nine kills, but the Crusaders were defeated by Colgate in three sets on the road on Saturday.

  • Sifferlen's 375 kills this season ranks fifth in school history.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sifferlen’s .206 hitting percentage was a team-best, sophomore right side hitter Lynsey Petersen added five kills.
  • Petersen, junior middle hitter Mary Mullen and sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville each had two stuffs at the net to lead the Crusaders.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner posted12 digs to notch the team lead, as freshman setter Lizzie Webb registered 16 assists.
  • The Raiders amounted a .425 team hitting percentage with Kathleen Harris leading the way with 11 kills, a .429 hitting percentage and a shared team lead of 12 digs. Jaelah Hutchison and Katie Stebbins each had three blocks to lead colgate at the net. The Raiders also averaged a 68 percent (24-35) sideout percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Colgate started the match strong, jumping out to a 16-3 lead in the first set. Holy Cross would get no closer than 12 points, as the Raiders averaged a .440 hitting percentage, taking set one, 25-10.
  • Tied at 3-3 in the second set, Colgate used a 12-2 surge to move out to a 15-5 advantage, as Harris and Taylor Flaherty combined for six kills during this span. A block by Sifferlen and Mullen put the Crusaders within single digits, but Holy Cross couldn’t overcome the deficit, as the Raiders won set two, 25-11.
  • Colgate held a 6-1 lead to start the third set before the Crusaders rallied for a 4-2 run to get within three points. Colgate then took 13 of the next 16 points to move out to a 21-8 advantage. Trailing 24-8, Holy Cross battled back to win three straight points but couldn’t get the edge, as Colgate won the final point to secure the 3-0 match victory. The Raiders wrapped up the third set with a .429 team hitting percentage.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS

  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp holds the Holy Cross all-time record with 1,327 career digs.
  • Sifferlen has 1,212 career kills, which are third all-time in the program’s history. She needs 34 more kills to rank second all-time.
  • Mullen currently ranks third all-time in the program’s history with 230 career blocks and needs three more blocks to move up to the second-place spot. She needs 12 more stuffs to set a new Holy Cross record.
  • Magner is now ranked ninth all-time in program history with 953 career digs and is 139 digs away from ranking eighth.
  • Magner is 34 digs away from ranking 10th all-time in school history in single-season digs.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders return to action with two matches for their final stretch of the eight match road slate from Oct. 28-29. First, Holy Cross will travel to Washington, D.C. to take on American on Friday, Oc.t 28 at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday, Oct. 29 to face Loyola Maryland at 2:00 p.m.
