Volleyball Concludes Season With 3-0 Win Over Lehigh On Senior Day

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Holy Cross volleyball team with 24 kills and 13 digs for her 17th double-double of the season, as the Crusaders captured their third straight sweep victory in a 3-0 win over Lehigh to conclude their 2016 season at home on Saturday.


  • With 10 wins this season, Holy Cross has posted its most victories since 2011 when the team went 10-21. Additionally, Holy Cross’ six Patriot League wins this season is tied for the most wins in conference action since joining the league in 1990. The Crusaders have tallied six Patriot League wins just four other times (2000, 2004, 2011 and 2014).
  • With a 10-19 overall record, Holy Cross registered its best overall mark since the 2010 season when the Crusaders went 12-14.
  • The last time Holy Cross took down Lehigh was during the 2007 season when the Crusaders won, 3-0 on Nov. 3.
  • Holy Cross finished its season winning nine of its last 10 sets during the final three matches of the year. The last time the Crusaders did this was during the 2011 season. 
  • Sifferlen ended the season setting a new Holy Cross record with 4.97 kills per set.  
  • With 29 assists and 12 digs, freshman setter Lizzie Webb recorded her 14th career double-double.
  • Sifferlen has tallied double-digit kills in the past 41 of 43 matches, leading the team in kills in the last 36 of 38 contests.
  • With her double-double of 24 kills and 13 digs, Sifferlen recorded her 17th double-double this season and 36th of her career.
  • With her 29 assists tonight, Webb now ranks sixth all-time in the school’s record book with 850 assists this season.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner now ranks fifth all-time in program history with 423 digs this season.
  • Magner is ranked ninth all-time in program history with 1,044 career digs and is 48 digs away from ranking eighth.


  • As a team, Holy Cross recorded a .268 hitting percentage. Sifferlen led the way with a .404 hitting percentage.
  • Magner added 12 digs to the victory.
  • Sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville and Webb shared a team-best four blocks. Webb’s four stuffs stands as a career high.
  • The Mountain Hawks were led by Ana Spangenberg, who recorded 12 kills (.357 hitting percentage). Stephanie Stieber led the back row with 15 digs.


  • The first set remained a tight battle, as both sides exchanged points with the score staying within at least a three-point margin. Trailing 18-15, Holy Cross scored three straight points with freshman outside hitter Alessandra Vasquez serving through the run and Sifferlen picking up two kills during that span. With the score tied 21-21, Holy Cross tallied another three unanswered points to take a 24-22 edge. The Mountain Hawks scored one more point before Sifferlen delivered a powerful kill on the set point, as the Crusaders took set one, 25-23. Holy Cross amassed a .317 hitting percentage in the first set with a 68 percent side out mark.
  • The second set stayed within a close three-point margin with the Crusades leading the way for most of the frame. Lehigh then tied the set at 20-20, but Holy Cross rallied to win five of the last eight points, carried by three kills from Sifferlen in the final stretch to win the second set, 25-23. The Crusaders entered the locker room with a 2-0 match advantage.
  • Holy Cross brought the momentum into the third set, jumping out to an 11-6 advantage. Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen served through six points during this run, as Somerville recorded two blocks. Lehigh won the following three points, closing in on three with the score, 11-9. The margin stayed within three points until the score was 15-12 with the Crusaders on top. Holy Cross then won eight of the next 10 points to extend its lead to 23-14. The Mountain Hawks fought back, but only scored four more times, as the Crusaders found the set’s final two points with Vasquez pummeling the last kill of the match. Holy Cross won set three, 25-18, securing the three-set sweep victory.


  • Prior to Saturday’s match, the Crusaders celebrated their two seniors, Sifferlen and Emily Popp for their hard work and dedication to the program on and off the court over the past four years.


  • Popp holds the Holy Cross all-time record with 1,381 career digs.
  • Sifferlen’s 497 kills this season is a Holy Cross all-time record.
  • Mullen holds the all-time Holy Cross record with 247 career blocks.
  • Sifferlen’s 1,334 career kills rank second all-time in program history.
