  • The Lead: Senior guard Robert Champion totaled 23 points, five rebounds and three steals as the Holy Cross men’s basketball team downed Marist 68-59 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He hit seven of 12 field goal attempts on the day, including three of five shots from three-point range.
  • Champion also knocked down all six of his free throw attempts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made 52.2 percent of their field goal attempts on the afternoon, while the Red Foxes connected on 46.8 percent of their shots from the floor.
  • Holy Cross also totaled 12 steals in the game, while forcing Marist to commit 18 turnovers.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander recorded 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
  • Senior center Matt Husek added 12 points and two blocked shots, while sophomore forward Karl Charles chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
  • Brian Parker led the Red Foxes with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close early on, and Marist held a 10-8 lead with 15:40 remaining in the first half.
  • The Crusaders then went on a 12-0 run to pull in front, including nine points by Champion.
  • Holy Cross was still up by 10 (31-21) with 4:26 left in the half, before the Red Foxes scored eight straight points to get back into the game.
  • The Crusaders eventually led 36-31 at the break, and held a 45-38 advantage with 15 minutes to go in regulation.
  • Holy Cross then scored 13 straight points to take an insurmountable 58-38 lead with 9:47 remaining.
  • Marist was able to whittle the deficit down to seven points in the closing minutes, but the Crusaders hit five of six free throw attempts in the final 60 seconds to pull out a nine-point victory.

 

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross reached double figures in steals for the seventh time this season.
  • The Crusaders improved to 5-2 all-time against the Red Foxes, including a 3-0 mark in Worcester.
  • Prior to the contest, Alexander was presented with a commemorative ball, after scoring his 1,000th career point during the game at Rhode Island on Dec. 19.
