Benzanís Last Second Shot Lifts Holy Cross Over Navy

  • The Lead: Sophomore guard Patrick Benzan took the ball the length of the floor and drove to the basket for a layup with 0.1 seconds remaining, to lift the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 51-50 victory over Navy at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, senior forward Malachi Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • Alexander led the team with 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Midshipmen held a 27-21 lead early in the second half, before Holy Cross went on a 13-2 run to pull in front 34-29.
  • Navy scored the next 11 points to re-gain the lead (40-34 with 6:55 to go), and was later up by four (50-46) after a tip-in by Tom Lacey with 1:22 remaining.
  • Benzan drained a short jumper in the lane on the Crusaders’ next possession, before hitting one-of-two free throws with 11.8 seconds left to make the score 50-49.
  • Navy’s Ryan Pearson then missed the front end of a one-and-one with 7.6 seconds on the clock.
  • Alexander grabbed the rebound and passed to Benzan, who drove down the court to hit the winning shot.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Benzan finished the game with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, while hitting five of seven field goal attempts.
  • Senior guard Robert Champion added 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
  • The Midshipmen were led by George Kiernan with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals.
  • The Crusaders hit just 36.0 percent of their field goal attempts on the night, but held a 33-30 rebounding advantage and committed only nine turnovers.
  • Navy connected on 42.2 percent of its shots from the floor.
