  • The Lead: Sophomore forward Karl Charles totaled 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 71-54 victory over Lafayette at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Charles was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He hit five of 10 field goals and nine of 10 foul shots on the evening.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made 51.1 percent of their field goal attempts, 39.1 percent of their three-pointers and 73.7 percent of their free throws in the game.
  • Holy Cross also held the Leopards to 35.3 percent shooting from the floor and 22.2 shooting from beyond the arc, while recording 13 steals and forcing 19 turnovers.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander finished the night with 19 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Patrick Benzan added 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.
  • Matt Klinewski led Lafayette with 14 points and seven rebounds.

  

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders opened the game by jumping out to an early 7-0 lead, and were later up by five (12-7) with 11 minutes left in the first half.
  • Holy Cross then went on a 15-0 run to increase its advantage to 20 points (27-7), with Alexander scoring seven points during that spurt.
  • The Crusaders eventually took a 33-13 lead into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross continued to dominate play early in the second half, using runs of 8-0 and 7-0 to take an insurmountable 33-point advantage (54-21) with 13:34 left to play.
  • The Crusaders were still up by 27 (60-33) with 8:55 remaining, before the Leopards went on a 12-1 run to cut the deficit to 16 (61-45).
  • But Lafayette would get no closer than 15 points, as Holy Cross cruised to a 17-point victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Charles set a new season high with his 20 points scored.
  • Senior guard Anthony Thompson handed out a season-best seven assists.
  • Senior guard Thomas Kennedy scored the first two points of his collegiate career late in the game.
  • The Crusaders are now tied with Lehigh for third place in the Patriot League standings at 3-2.
