Women's Ice Hockey Takes Down Castleton 4-0 On The Road

The Lead:  Junior forward Emily Lissner led the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team with two goals, as the Crusaders captured their fifth-straight win with a 4-0 victory over Castleton on the road on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The score remained tied at 0-0 after the first period with Holy Cross outshooting Castleton, 9-6, and each side skating off without a power play opportunity.
  • Holy Cross started the second period with momentum, tallying two early goals. First junior forward Emily Lissner found the back of the net at the 1:14 mark for her third goal of the season, as sophomore forward Maeve Reilly earned an assist on the score. Then on a power play 2:47 minutes later, senior forward Elizabeth Scala netted her seventh goal of the year with freshman defender Hannah Gillis and senior co-captain defender Erin Hall picking up assists.
  • With under two minutes left in the second period, sophomore defender Tori Messina scored a third Holy Cross goal, as the Crusaders expanded out to a 3-0 lead after two. Holy Cross led 23-11 in second period shots, while going 1-2 on the power play and the Spartans went 0-1.
  • The Crusaders carried the momentum into the third period, registering one more goal before the final buzzer.
  • Lissner notched her second score of the night at the 4:59 mark, giving Holy Cross a 4-0 edge, as the Crusaders pulled away with the 4-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders were led by Lissner and Scala who each had two points. Lissner netted two goals, while Scala recorded a goal and an assist.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Spartans, 38-18.
  • Freshman goaltender Marcia LaPlante made 18 saves to earn the win for Holy Cross and her second shutout of the season. She now has a 4-0-0 record this year.
  • Rylie Wills made 28 stops, allowing 4 goals to take the loss for Castleton.  
  • Holy Cross went 1-3 on the power play, while The Spartans went 0-3.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross is undefeated against Castleton, with a 20-0-0 all-time series record versus the Spartans.
  • The Crusaders have now won five straight games. Over the course of Holy Cross’ winning-streak, the Crusaders have outscored opponents 19-4. Over the past five games, Holy Cross has fended off 24 straight power plays for a perfect penalty kill.
  • With the 4-0 win, Holy Cross has shutout two opponents in a row.The last time Holy Cross shutout back-to-back opponents was in 2015, when the Crusaders took down St. Anselm on Jan. 24 and Castleton on Jan. 30.
  • Lissner now has four goals and five assists for nine points on the season.
  • Scala now has seven goals and eight assists for 15 points this season.
  • Violette has notched at least one point in five straight games.
  • Violette leads the Crusaders with 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists this season.
