Crusaders Rally For Win Versus St. Michaelís, 3-1

The Lead: Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, the Crusaders then netted three goals as the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team defeated St. Michael’s, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Julie Matthias tied the game at 1-1, while junior captain Kara Violette then scored two straight goals for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Purple Knights took a 1-0 lead with just 1:12 left in the first period, when Jillian Witwicki knocked in a rebound from a shot by Kaitlyn Wurzer.
  • The Crusaders outshot St. Michael’s, 12-10.
  • The second period went scoreless as the Crusaders outshot the Purple Knights by a 11-3 margin. 
  • The Purple Knights went 0-1 on the power play.
  • At 1:48 of the third period, Matthias tied the contest when she fired a wrist shot past the stick side of Erica Ragazzo.
  • Then at 10:05 Violette scored the game-winner on a breakaway.
  • Violette increased the lead at 17:22 when she tipped a shot by senior Elizabeth Scala past Ragazzo for the 3-1 final score.    

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outshot St. Michael’s, 33-16.
  • Junior goaltender Tessie Salatas made 15 saves and is now 7-2-0, while Ragazzo posted 30 saves.
  • The Purple Knights went 0-2 on the power play.
  • The Crusaders won 33 of 40 face-offs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross is undefeated against St. Michael’s, with a 38-0-1 all-time series record versus the Purple Knights.
  • The Crusaders have now won six straight games. Over the course of Holy Cross’ winning-streak, the Crusaders have outscored its opponents, 22-5. Over the past six games, Holy Cross has fended off 26 straight power plays for a perfect penalty kill.
  • Violette has notched at least one point in six straight games.
  • Violette leads the Crusaders with 23 points on 11 goals and 12 assists this season. For her career, she has 37 goals and 44 assists for 81 points. Her 37 goals are tied for 10th all-time in program history.
