THE LEAD: Junior captain Brett Mulcahy, freshman forward Kevin Darrar and junior forward Scott Pooley each found the back of the net as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team tied Mercyhurst, 3-3, on Friday night at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex in Worcester, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • At 2:08 of the first period, Taylor Best scored off a rebound from the shot of Joseph Duszak to put Mercyhurst ahead, 1-0.
  • At 7:20 of the period, junior forward Ryan Ferrill took a shot that deflected off the boards to Mulcahy as he backhanded the puck past Brandon Wildung’s stick side to tie the game at 1-1.
  • At 14:35 of the first period, Mercyhurst took the lead when Zach Todd fired a slapshot from the blue line that hit the post and was deflected into the net by Nathan Ferriero, making it a 2-1 contest.
  • Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst 12-8 in the first period.
  • Just 3:17 into the second period, the score was kept at 2-1 after a potential goal by Darrar was overruled once the officials reviewed the replay.
  • At 16:07 of the period, Holy Cross sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin took a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle that was deflected into the net by Darrar, tying the game at 2-2.
  • Just 31 seconds later, Best tried to push the puck past Berrafato’s glove side on a penalty shot, but Berrafato made the save to keep it a 2-2 contest.
  • With just 51.8 seconds left in the period, Pooley took a wrist shot from the right face-off circle that he fired past Wildung’s glove side and into the net, giving the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage going into the third period.
  • The Crusaders posted 19 shots in the second period, while the Lakers posted eight.
  • At 11:01 of the third period and with Mercyhurst on the power play, Best tapped the puck in from in front of the net past Berrafato’s stick side for his second goal, tying the game at 3-3 and sending it into overtime.
  • Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross 10-9 in the third period.
  • The Crusaders had four shots on goal in overtime, while the Lakers had three as neither team was able to post a game winner.
