The Lead:  Sophomore forward Sam Girard scored the only goal for the Crusaders, as the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team was defeated by Franklin Pierce, 2-1, on the road on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With 1:28 left on the clock in the first period, Girard found the back of the net, firing the puck to the top left corner from the left face-off circle, to give Holy Cross a 1-0 edge at the first intermission. Freshman defender Victoria Young picked up an assist on the goal after delivering the pass to Girard up the left-wing side across the red line.
  • Holy Cross outshot Franklin Pierce, 12-3, in the opening period, while going 0-1 on the only power play.
  • Franklin Pierce answered with two power play goals in the second period to take the lead. Kayla Trujillo netted the first goal at the 14:32 mark to lock the score at 1-1 before Delaney Guimont scored the go-ahead goal under three minutes later, as Franklin Pierce led 2-1 to enter the final frame.
  • Outshooting Holy Cross, 8-5, the Ravens went 2-2 on second period power plays, while the Crusaders went 0- 2.
  • Holy Cross outshot Franklin Pierce, 7-3, in the third period but couldn’t overcome the deficit, as the Ravens held onto the 2-1 win. Both sides went 0-1 on the power play in the third period.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outshot Franklin Pierce, 24-14.
  • Junior goaltender Tessie Salatas made 12 saves and is now 7-3-0, while Madison Murray posted 23 saves to earn the win for the Ravens.
  • The Ravens went 2-3 on the power play, as Holy Cross went 0-4.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross is 4-4-0 all-time versus Franklin Pierce.
  • Girard now shares the team lead with 12 goals this season. She adds seven assists for 18 points, which is second on the team.
  • Young earned her third career assist. She has one goal and three assists for four points this season.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Jan. 27, when the Crusaders travel to UMass Boston. The puck drops at 4:00 p.m.
