The Lead: Senior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 63-55 victory over American at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

 MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He reached a career high with five steals.
  • Alexander also hit six of 11 field goals and four of five shots from inside the arc.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made 42.9 percent of their field goal attempts, 20.0 percent of their three-pointers and 70.6 percent of their free throws in the game.
  • Holy Cross posted 16 steals and forced 23 turnovers.
  • Sophomore forward Karl Charles totaled 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
  • Sophomore guard Patrick Benzan finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists, while senior guard Robert Champion added 10 points, four steals and three rebounds.
  • Delante Jones led American with 18 points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After American jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, the Crusaders scored six straight points to go in front 9-5 with 11:17 left in the half.
  • A 5-0 run put the Eagles back in front 10-9 with 10:06 remaining.
  • Then with the score tied 15-15 with 5:50 to go before the break, the Crusaders outscored the Eagles 13-8 to take a 28-23 lead into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross continued to stay ahead early in the second half, 34-31, with 15:54 left to play.
  • The Crusaders then went on a 10-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 44-31 with 9:59 remaining.
  • The Crusaders kept the lead for the entirety of the second half, and finished the game with an eight-point victory against the Eagles (63-55).

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders tied their season-high of 16 steals.
  • Holy Cross snapped its eight-game losing streak versus American.
  • Alexander’s five steals set a new career high.
