Men’s Basketball Edged By Loyola 65-62

  • The Lead: Senior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 20 points, three rebounds and three steals, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Loyola (Md.) 65-62 at Reitz Arena.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He hit eight of 13 field goal attempts on the night, including three of five shots from three-point range.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made 44.4 percent of their field goal attempts and 84.2 percent of the free throws on the night, while forcing 16 turnovers.
  • The Greyhounds connected on 46.3 percent of their shots from the floor and 75.0 percent at the charity stripe, in addition to holding a 30-22 rebounding advantage.
  • Senior guard Robert Champion finished the game with 17 points and three rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Patrick Benzan added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Loyola was led by Andrew Kostecka with a career-high 20 points, three assists and three steals.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close throughout a first half which featured two ties and four lead changes.
  • The Crusaders were up 10-9 with 12:34 left until the break, before Kostecka hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Greyhounds the lead.
  • Loyola increased the margin to eight (29-21) late in the half, and eventually took a 31-27 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Greyhounds held a single-digit lead for most of the second half, and were up by seven (59-52) with 2:24 left to play.
  • Alexander then hit a three-pointer, and a pair of free throws by freshman guard Clayton Le Sann made the score 59-57 with 32.6 seconds left.
  • The Crusaders would close to within two points three more times in the closing seconds, but Loyola connected on six of eight free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when it travels to Navy for a 4:00 p.m. game.
