Holy Cross Athletics   02-01-2017

WORCESTER, Mass. — Holy Cross head football coach Tom Gilmore has announced that his team’s roster will increase by 20 student-athletes for the 2017 season. The 20 newest Crusaders all signed with Holy Cross as part of National Signing Day on Wednesday, with the class ranked as the best in the Patriot League by

“We had the opportunity to bring in an outstanding class this year, and we are extremely excited about it,” said Gilmore. “We have set high goals for this fall, and the size and quality of this class can help us accomplish them. We have added key players at every position group on both sides of the ball, improving both our skill level and depth.”

The 20 student-athletes making up this year’s class come from all across the country, including 11 different states. The state of Georgia produced the most signees with five, followed by three from Florida. The Crusaders also added two from California, Illinois and Massachusetts, and one each from Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Texas.

This year’s class provides a good balance between the offense and defense, with 11 players listed on offense, eight on defense and one specialist. On the offensive side of the ball, the Crusaders bring in four linemen, two quarterbacks, two wide receivers, two tight ends and one running back. For the defense, Holy Cross adds three players in the secondary, three at linebacker and two along the line.

The Crusaders will look to contend for the Patriot League championship in 2017 with the return of 12 starters. Holy Cross is set to play five games at Fitton Field this fall, beginning with the home opener against New Hampshire on Sept. 16. Other key home dates will come against Lafayette (Sept. 30), Monmouth (Oct. 7), Colgate (Oct. 21) and Georgetown (Oct. 28).
