Holy Cross Earns 56-50 Victory Over Colgate

  • The Lead: Senior guard Robert Champion totaled 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 56-50 victory over Colgate at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He hit five of 10 field goal attempts and six of nine free throws on the night.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made just 38.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the game, but were able to hold the Raiders to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor.
  • Holy Cross also forced 19 turnovers on the night, while recording nine steals.
  • Senior center Matt Husek finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander added eight points and four steals, while sophomore forward Karl Charles recorded eight points and two rebounds.
  • Jordan Swopshire led Colgate with 17 points and 10 boards.

 

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close early on, with the Raiders holding a 6-5 lead after the first four minutes of play.
  • The Crusaders scored the next seven points to claim the lead, and eventually pulled in front by nine (24-15) with 4:06 remaining before the break.
  • Colgate was able to trim the margin to 29-24 at halftime, then opened the second half with a 9-3 run to pull back in front (33-32 with 14:45 left to play).
  • The game stayed close for several minutes, and the Raiders were up 40-39 with 8:01 remaining.
  • A layup by senior guard Anthony Thompson then ignited a.12-3 run which gave Holy Cross the lead for good (51-43 with 3:55 left).
  • Colgate would get no closer than five points the rest of the way, as the Crusaders pulled out the win despite making just three of six free throws in the final minute.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • With the victory, Holy Cross swept the regular season series from Colgate for the first time since 2013-2014.
  • This marks the third time this season the Crusaders have held their opponent to 50 points or less.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, Feb. 6, when it travels to Bucknell for a 7:00 p.m. game. The contest between the Crusaders and the Bison will be shown live to a national audience on the CBS Sports Network.
