Lopez's Hat Trick Propels Crusaders To 8-2 Victory On Pink The Rink Night

The Lead: Junior forward Danny Lopez recorded his first career hat trick and senior assistant captain Mike Barrett had four points as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated American International, 8-2, on Friday evening at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Pink the Rink night.



  • Junior forward Scott Pooley opened the scoring at 3:57 in the first period when he sent a wrist shot from the slot that ricocheted off the cross bar and then in to the goal to give the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin recorded an assist on the play.
  • Then at 14:23, just six seconds into the power play, freshman forward Kevin Darrar fired a shot that hit Barrett on the leg. Barrett collected the puck and knocked it in to the back of the net to secure the power play goal and make the score 2-0. Coughlin tallied another assist on the goal.
  • Less than a minute later at 15:06, junior captain Brett Mulcahy sent a pass to junior forward Ryan Ferrill who backhanded the puck into the net to increase the Crusader lead to 3-0. Sophomore forward Mitch Collett collected an assist on the play.
  • In the first period, Holy Cross and AIC both had eight shots on goal and the Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play.
  • At 3:27 in the second period, AIC forward Martin Mellberg fired a shot to the upper glove side of the net on a breakaway to make the score 3-1. Johnny Mueller and Dominik Florian each recorded an assist on the play.
  • Just two minutes later at 5:24, the Crusaders increased their lead to 4-1 when Barrett sent a pass to Lopez who wristed a shot from the slot that found the back of the net.
  • At 14:01, AIC forward Kyle Stephan fired a shot that hit off the post.
  • Lopez increased the Crusader lead at 15:38 to 5-1 when he sent a one-timer from the slot while on the power play. Barrett and freshman defenseman Charlie Barrow each tallied an assist on the play.
  • Shortly after at 18:42, sophomore forward Michael Laffin sent a pass to Mulcahy at the right face-off circle, who one-timed a shot over the stick side of the net to make the score 6-1. Barrow recorded an assist on the goal.
  • Holy Cross and AIC both had 10 shots on goal in the second period. The Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play while the Yellow Jackets went 0-3.
  • Just 18 seconds into the third period at 19:42 while on the power play, Lopez netted his third goal of the game with a wrist shot from the left face off circle to increase the Crusader lead to 7-1. Tonight was Lopez’s first hat trick of his career.
  • At 15:47, Pooley sent a wrist shot to the stick side of the net for his second goal of the night, making the score 8-1. Freshman defenseman Patrick O’ Leary and sophomore forward Peter Crinella each recorded an assist on the play. This was O’Leary’s first collegiate point.
  • At 18:49, Marc Dubeau found the back of the net for the Yellow Jackets for the 8-2 final score.




  • Holy Cross outshot AIC, 28-26.
  • The Crusaders went 3-7 on the power play, while AIC went 0-4.
  • Junior goaltender Paul Berrafato made 23 saves while AIC goalie Alex Murray recorded 16, Justin Ketola recorded three and Zackarias Skog recorded one.
  • The Crusaders won 32 face-offs, while the Yellow Jackets secured 35. 


  • Lopez has now posted at least one point in 23 of the 28 games this season. He leads the team with 30 points. His 17 goals are tied for sixth in the Division I history of the program for the most goals in a single season.
  • Tonight was Lopez’s first hat trick of his career. It is the 23rd hat trick in the Division I history of the program. This is the second time in school history that there has been three hat tricks in a season as junior forward T.J. Moore had two hat tricks in the first two games of the season. The last time this happened was in 2001-2002.
  • Lopez leads the nation in power play goals with 12. His 12 power play goals are second all-time in the program’s Division I history. Tyler McGregor holds the record with 13 in 2005-2006.
  • Barrett and Barrow's three assists tonight tied for 10th all-time in the school’s Division I history for a game.
  • Barrett now has 94 career points with 39 goals and 55 assists.
  • Holy Cross is 6-2-3 over its last 11 games.
  • O’Leary recorded his first collegiate point tonight.
  • The Crusaders are 8-0-1 when they score the first goal in the game.
  • With the win, Holy Cross is now tied for third place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 24 points. The top five teams earn a first round bye in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament.
  • The last time the Crusaders swept a home-and-home series was against Sacred Heart on Feb. 26-27, 2016.
  • Holy Cross outscored AIC 11-3 in this week’s two-game series.


  • The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on RIT at 7:05 p.m.


  • Tonight, the Crusaders partnered with HC for a Cure, a Holy Cross student organization devoted to spreading awareness about breast cancer and fundraising for local breast cancer organizations. HC for a Cure sold t-shirts and sponsored a chuck a puck contest to raise money for Pink Revolution.
