Men’s Swimming And Diving Concludes Dual Meet Action With 168-123 Win Over Springfield

The Lead: Sophomore Steve Tierney placed first in each of his three individual events and swam with the 200 medley relay team that finished on top, as the Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team defeated Springfield, 168-123, in a dual meet at home on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tierney, along with senior co-capatian Andrew Higgins, junior Jake Sbarbaro and sophomore Corey Manley started the meet strong for the Crusaders, notching first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.18.
  • Tierney posted first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:48.74), 50 freestyle (22.45) and 100 freestyle (49.40).
  • Sbarbaro also swam well, recording two first place marks. In the 200 butterfly, he registered a time of 2:01.43 before placing first in the 100 butterfly (54.24).
  • The Crusaders swept Springfield at the diving board, recording first-place scores in both the one and three-meter dives. First in the three-meter dive, sophomore Riccardo Marcangeli hit a score of 228.53 to take first. Next in the one-meter dive, junior Jimmy Nugent took first place with a season-best and personal record score of 262.20.
  • Higgins swam for two second-place finishes in both the breaststroke events. He recorded a time of 1:00.77 in the 100 breaststroke before reaching a time of 2:14.70 in the 200 breaststroke.
  • In the backstroke, the Crusaders settled for a pair of second-place finishes. Junior Ethan Nightingale was just over a second behind the first place Springfield swimmer in the 100 backstroke with a  time of 56.87. Then in the 200 backstroke, he finished second again with a 2:04.38 mark.
  • Freshman Chris Fusco placed second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:32.13, good for a season-best mark for the Crusaders.
  • Austin Von Heeringen led the way for Springfield, taking three first-place finishes in his individual events.
