Crusaders Defeated By Lafayette

  • The Lead: Lafayette’s Matt Klinewski totaled 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Leopards to a 69-59 victory over the Holy Cross men’s basketball team at the Kirby Sports Center.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, senior guard Robert Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • Champion scored a team-high 20 points, while draining six of 12 shots from three-point range.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Lafayette hit 44.7 percent of its field goal attempts on the night, and also made 21 of 23 free throws (91.3 percent).
  • The Crusaders connected on 37.3 percent of their shots from the floor, while only attempting four free throws (making all four).
  • The Leopards also held a 41-22 rebounding advantage.
  • Senior guard Anthony Thompson finished the game with nine points and six rebounds.
  • Sophomore forward Karl Charles added eight points and four assists.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close early on, with Lafayette holding a 7-5 lead after the first four minutes of play.
  • The Leopards then scored nine straight points to extend their lead to double figures (16-5).
  • Lafayette would go in front by as many as 16 points late in the first half, before eventually taking a 33-21 advantage into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross started the second half hot, using a 10-0 run to trim the margin to two points (33-31) with 16:18 left to play.
  • The score stayed close for several minutes, and the Leopards led 43-40 with 10:17 remaining.
  • Lafayette then scored seven straight points to go back in front by 10 (50-40), and the Crusaders would get no closer than six points the rest of the night.
  • The Leopards went on to hit eight of 10 free throws in the final three minutes to pull out the victory.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 12, when it plays host to Lehigh at 12:05 p.m. The contest between the Crusaders and the Mountain Hawks will be shown live to a national audience on the CBS Sports Network.
