Men's Basketball Falls To Army West Point

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Army West Point 52, Holy Cross 47 
  • Records: Holy Cross 13-15, 7-8 PL; Army West Point 10-17, 4-11 PL
  • Location: Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex, Worcester, Mass.
  • Date: February 15, 2017
  • The Lead: Senior guard Robert Champion led all scorers with 21 points, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team fell to Army West Point, 52-47, at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • In addition to his 21 points, he tallied two steals and hit all five of his free throw attempts.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made just 32.6 percent of their field goal attempts on the night, while Army was able to connect on 38.3 percent of its shots from the floor.
  • Holy Cross posted 12 steals and forced 22 turnovers.
  • Sophomore forward Karl Charles led the team with five steals, while senior guard Anthony Thompson posted a team-high eight rebounds.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross held an early 6-3 advantage, before Army responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-6 lead with 14:31 remaining in the first half.
  • With Army leading 16-14, Champion’s two foul shots tied up the game 16-16 with 9:13 left before the break.
  • Trailing 22-18, Holy Cross scored five consecutive points to go ahead 23-22.
  • The Black Knights then closed out the half by scoring 10 of the last 12 points to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.
  • Champion opened the second half by scoring eight unanswered points to move the Crusaders out to a 33-32 lead with 16:56 left in regulation.
  • Army then outscored Holy Cross 9-3 to take a 41-36 lead with 7:37 remaining.
  • With 1:35 to go in the second half Army took its biggest lead of the night, 49-41.
  • Holy Cross then went on a 6-0 run to cut the Black Knights’ lead to 49-47 with just 34 seconds left.
  • But that was as close as the Crusaders would get, as Army hit three of four free throws to pull out a five-point victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander played in the 127th game of his collegiate career against Army. He is now Holy Cross' all-time leader in career games played.

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19, when they play at American at 12:00 p.m.
