Crusaders Capture Two New Records At Patriot League Championship

Result: 8th out of 10 Teams (79 pts. / through Day 2 of 4)

The Lead:  The Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team swam to two new school records at the second day of competition at the Patriot League Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of sophomore Steve Tierney, senior co-captain Andrew Higgins, junior Jake Sbarbaro and sophomore Corey Manley captured a school record with their time of 3:27.62 for a seventh-place finish. The squad broke the prior record of 3:59.38 set at the 2010 Patriot League Championship. Navy won the race with its relay time of 3:10.35.
  • Tierney set his second individual record at the Patriot League Championship while swimming as part of the 400 medley team, as he reached a time of 52.06 for the 100 backstroke swimming the leadoff leg.
  • Sbarbaro led the way for the Crusaders in the 200-yard IM, swimming for a time of 1:57.15. Sbarbaro finished 26th out of 40 swimmers. Army West Point’s Peter Mikheyev finished first in this race with a time of 1:47.33.
  • Tierney was the first Holy Cross swimmer to finish in the 50-yard freestyle to lead the Crusaders with a personal and season-best time of 21.38. Tierney just missed the school’s record by 0.13 seconds. The Black Knights claimed their second victory of the day with Brandon McCredie capturing first place, swimming for a time of 19.93.
  • Freshman Chris Fusco took the 39th-place spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a career and season-best time of 5:00 36. Army West Point won its third swimming event of the day with Tom Ottman reaching first place in this event with his time of 4:22.63.
  • In the first segment of the men’s Patriot League Championship diving events, junior Jimmy Nugent landed in 10th place in the one-meter dive with a score of 210. Right behind him in 11th was sophomore Riccardo Marcangeli, who registered a score of 202.30. Bradly Butcher of Navy won the one-meter dive with his score of 386.10.
