Women's Basketball Earns 51-46 Victory Over American

  • The Lead: After a close first half and a challenging third quarter, the Holy Cross women’s basketball team came back from a 16-point deficit in the final quarter to earn a victory over American on Saturday afternoon in Worcester.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman guard Madalyn Smith led the team with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
  • Junior guard Katie Doherty posted 13 points with one assist and four steals.
  • Freshman forward Lauren Manis also scored in double-digits, tallying 10 points with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Emily Kinneston led the Eagles with 13 points while posting five rebounds and four assists.
  • Lauren Crisler also had a strong night for American, posting 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • American scored the first points of the game, but Doherty followed close behind with a layup to tie the game 2-2. The Crusaders continued to hold the Eagles from gaining a larger lead and ended the first quarter 12-9.
  • In the second quarter the Crusaders battled back-and-forth with American, taking the lead three times and keeping the score tied twice.
  • Despite the Crusaders’ strong performance, American took the lead in the end of the second quarter, leaving the score at 24-20 for the end at the half.
  • Holy Cross had a strong response in the start of the second half, scoring 10 points. Ultimately, American posted 18 points in the third quarter and increased their lead to 42-30.
  • In the exciting final quarter, Holy Cross posted 21 points to take the lead over American.
  • In the first three and a half minutes of the final quarter the Crusaders had a series of four three-pointers, three from Smith and one from Doherty. It was Tricia Byrne’s two good free throws that pushed Holy Cross to take the lead over American with 3:30 remaining.
  • The Crusaders held the Eagles to just four points in the fourth quarter.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Holy Cross is now 22-15 all-time against American, and 12-6 in games played in Worcester. The Crusaders have won their previous five games against the Eagles.
  • Smith set a new career-high in scoring 16 points, and was named the George L. O'Brien MVP as part of Winter Homecoming.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross will return to action this Wednesday, Feb. 22, as the Crusaders travel Baltimore, Md. to take on Loyola (Md.) at 7:00 p.m.
