  • The Lead: Senior center Matt Husek scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 69-54 victory over American at Bender Arena.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Husek was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • In addition to his 20 points, he posted five rebounds and two blocked shots.
  • Husek hit eight of nine field goal attempts on the day, including four of five shots from three-point range.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders started the game by jumping out to a 9-0 lead after the first five and a half minutes of play.
  • American scored the next nine points to tie up the game, and Holy Cross would later hold a 16-14 advantage with 6:49 left before the break.
  • Five straight points by senior guard Robert Champion then put the Crusaders up by seven (21-14), and Holy Cross went on to take a 28-21 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Crusaders held onto a single-digit lead for the majority of the second half, and were up 47-44 with eight minute left to play.
  • Holy Cross then went on a 12-0 run over the next four and half minutes to put the game away.
  • Senior guard Anthony Thompson drained a pair of three-pointers during that spurt, while Champion added four points.
  • American would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as the Crusaders made eight of 10 free throws in the final three minutes to secure the win.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross hit 51.1 percent of its field goal attempts, 61.5 percent of its three-pointers and 71.4 percent of its free throws on the day.
  • The Eagles made just 40.4 percent of their shots from the floor and 54.5 percent at the charity stripe.
  • The Crusaders held a 33-28 rebounding advantage, in addition to recording eight steal and five blocked shots.
  • Champion finished the game with 16 points and five rebounds, while Thompson added eight points, four boards and four steals.
  • American was led by Delante Jones and Sa’eed Nelson with 16 points each.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

Robert Champion

  • During the game, Champion became the 51st 1,000-point scorer in school history.
  • He scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career on a tip-in with 4:28 remaining in the second half.
  • With the win, Holy Cross snapped an 11-game losing streak at Bender Arena.
  • The Crusaders are now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Patriot League at 8-8 with two games remaining.
