(New England Baseball Complex) The Lead: Holy Cross scored a pair of runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth, but could not complete the comeback as they fell to Central Connecticut by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After three scoreless innings, the Blue Devils were first to get on the board as Buddy Dewaine notched an RBI single to right field to put Central Connecticut up 1-0.
The Blue Devils added another run in the fifth inning, as Franklin Jennings hit a lead-off double to left field before scoring on a ground out.
In the top of the ninth, Tyler Coleman made it 3-0 for Central Connecticut with a sacrifice fly.
The Crusaders put together a strong offensive showing in the bottom of the ninth, as junior Cam O'Neillnotched two RBIs with a single that scored senior Josh Hasselland sophomore Alex Gionis. Holy Cross got one more runner on base with single from freshman Austin Masel, but the Crusaders could not bring in the tying run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Holy Cross outhit the Blue Devils 6-5.
Central Connecticut left eight runners on base, while Holy Cross left four.
Holy Cross utilized 10 pitchers in the game, with sophomore Pat McGowantaking the loss.
Andrew Hinckley earned the win for the Blue Devils, allowing one hit through five innings.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
This was the first game the Crusaders have played in Massachusetts during the month of February in program history.
Holy Cross is back in action this weekend, as the Crusaders travel to Auburn for three games beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3:00 p.m.
