Men's Lacrosse Falls To Harvard, 12-9

The Lead: Morgan Cheek scored three goals and had two assists for the Crimson as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to Harvard, 12-9, in Worcester on Tuesday evening. Senior Jack Ortlieb led the Crusaders with two goals and two assists, while senior Kevin Lux posted a hat trick.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Matthew Fischetti found the back of the net for the Crusaders just 1:06 into the first quarter with an assist from senior Jon Vogel.
  • Harvard responded with a three-goal streak to close out the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.
  • Ortlieb scored for Holy Cross with 6:14 left to play in the second quarter. Harvard answered with a goal by Dalton Follows. Holy Cross then replied with a goal by Lux assisted by Ortlieb to cut the Crimson lead to 4-3 with 3:13 remaining in the second.
  • Cheek netted a goal just 14 seconds after Lux’s goal with 2:59 left in the second quarter. Lux then scored again with 1:28 remaining. At halftime, the score was 5-4, Harvard.
  • The Crimson started the third quarter with three straight goals as Harvard moved out to an 8-4 lead.
  • With 6:57 left in the third quarter, Ortlieb scored with an assist from junior Logan LeBlond.
  • Harvard responded with four unanswered goals to extend its lead to 12-5.
  • Holy Cross posted four consecutive goals tightening the gap to 12-9. Goals were scored by senior Sean Kirkpatrick, freshman Sean Mullaney, Lux and senior Marc Buermann.
  • But that is as close as Holy Cross would get as Harvard held on for the 12-9 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted nine saves, while Harvard goalkeeper Robert Shaw also had nine for the win.
  • Holy Cross outshot Harvard, 35-33.
  • The Crimson picked up 31 ground balls and the Crusaders had 22.
  • Holy Cross won 13 face-offs, while Harvard secured 12.
  • The Crusaders went 2-5 on extra-man opportunities, while the Crimson went 0-1.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ortlieb posted a career-best of four points.
  • Lux’s hat trick is his first in the season and seventh in his career.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, February 25, when they host Lehigh for a Patriot League matchup at 12:00 p.m.
