Women’s Basketball Tops Loyola In Final Seconds, 59-58

  • The Lead: Senior forward Madelyn Ganser scored the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining, as Holy Cross earned a 59-58 victory over Loyola on Wednesday night at Reitz Arena.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman forward Lauren Manis led the Crusaders with 22 points, five steals, seven rebounds and three blocks.
  • Junior guard Tricia Byrne scored 11 points and led Holy Cross with three assists.
  • Bri Betz-White led Loyola with 23 points and five assists on the night.
  • Molly Taylor also scored in double figures for the Greyhounds, tallying 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Greyhounds started out with a strong offensive showing in the first quarter, as Betz-White led with 10 of Loyola’s 15 points.
  • Holy Cross posted a 6-0 scoring run late in the second quarter to help make it a two point game (28-26) as the teams headed to their locker rooms at the half.
  • Byrne helped give Holy Cross its first lead of the game with a layup at 4:54 of the third quarter.
  • The Crusaders outscored the greyhounds 19-13 in the third to give them a 45-41 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The lead would change seven times down the stretch in the fourth quarter, with neither team leading by more than three points.
  • With three seconds remaining, Ganser picked up an offensive rebound off a blocked shot from Manis under the basket and scored the game-winning layup, making it 59-58 Holy Cross.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Holy Cross is now 5-4 all-time against the Greyhounds, and 3-1 in games played in Baltimore.
  • Manis registered a new career high with five steals. This was her fourth game with 20 or more points on the season.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 25, as the Crusaders travel to Boston University to take on the Terriers at 2:00 p.m.
