Crusaders Earn First Ever Win Versus Lehigh With 14-8 Victory

The Lead: Senior Jon Vogel tallied six goals and one assist for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team defeated Lehigh, 14-8, in Worcester in the Patriot League season opener for both teams on Saturday. This was the Crusaders' first ever win against Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks had won the previous 26 meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross began its lead early in the game with four consecutive goals by junior Matthew Fischetti, Vogel, senior Michael Urquhart and junior Logan LeBlond to take a 4-0 lead with 2:56 left in the first quarter.
  • Andrew Pettit then netted a goal for Lehigh with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Holy Cross then fired another five straight goals into the net. Goals were scored by sophomore Matt Farrell, Vogel and freshman Connor Waldron. Vogel posted three of the five goals. The Crusaders extended their lead to 9-1 with 4:26 left until the half.
  • Lehigh then responded with three consecutive goals from Pettit to close out the half with the Crusaders leading 9-4.
  • Senior Marc Buermann netted a goal with 12:16 left in the third to increase the Crusaders’ lead to 10-4.
  • Matt Raposo then posted a goal with 10:06 remaining in the third, while Tristan Rai found the back of the net with with 5:17 left to cut the Crusader lead to 10-6.
  • Holy Cross then went on a four-goal streak to take a 14-6 lead with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter. Senior Kevin Lux and Vogel each scored twice.
  • To close out the game, Tristan Rai buried two more goals into the net for Lehigh to end the game, 14-8.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro was outstanding in net as he posted 13 saves for a .619 save percentage.
  • Lehigh outshot Holy Cross, 41-36.
  • The Crusaders picked up 30 ground balls and the Mountain Hawks had 29.
  • Lehigh won 18 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured six.
  • The Mountain Hawks went 2-7 on extra-man opportunities, while the Crusaders went 0-4.
  • Farrell posted a team-best nine ground balls, while Conor Gaffney tallied 13 for Lehigh.
  • Pettit posted four goals and three assists for the Mountain Hawks.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Farrell and Waldron each posted their first collegiate goal.
  • Vogel recorded a career-best with six goals and seven points. His hat trick was his first of the season and the ninth of his career.
  • This was the Crusaders’ first ever victory versus Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks had won 26 straight.
