Score: Auburn 13, Holy Cross 4 Pitching Decision: W: Andrew Mitchell (2-0) | L: Justin Finan (0-1) Time: 1:00 p.m. Location: Auburn, Ala. (Plainsman Park) The Lead: The Holy Cross baseball team fell to Auburn by a score of 13-4 on Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, as senior Josh Hassellhit a double down the left field line to score junior Thomas Russo.
The Crusaders added another run in the fourth inning as freshman Alex Volpihit a home run over the left field wall.
The Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and took the lead in the fifth inning with eight runs on six hits.
Russo drove in a third run for Holy Cross in the sixth run, hitting a double to right center that brought home Volpi from first base.
Auburn added four more runs through the next two innings before Freshman Seth Learnedbrought home classmate Chris Rinaldiwith a double down the left field line in the ninth inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Auburn outhit the Crusaders 12-11.
Holy Cross left 10 runners on base, while the Tigers left 11.
Senior Justin Finantook the loss for the Crusaders, allowing eight runs (three earned) on six hits.
Andrew Mitchell got the win for Auburn after pitching 0.2 innings in relief.
Volpi led the Crusaders offense, hitting 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Volpi’s home run was the first of his career.
Holy Cross is back in action next weekend, as they begin a week-long road trip on March 4 with the first of four games at California-Riverside.
