Crusaders Fall At Navy In Patriot League Quarterfinals

  • The Lead: Navy’s George Kiernan hit a three-pointer with 29.2 seconds remaining to break a 42-42 tie and left the Midshipmen to a 49-42 victory over the Holy Cross men’s basketball team in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament  at Alumni Hall.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, senior guard Robert Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • Champion totaled 13 points and six rebounds on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams struggled to score early on, and the Crusaders held a 10-8 lead with 8:01 remaining in the first half.
  • Navy went on to outscore Holy Cross 11-2 over the remainder of the half, and took a 19-12 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Crusaders started the second half by hitting three of their first four shots, to trim the margin to 19-18 with 17:22 left to play.
  • The Midshipmen would hold onto a small lead for the next several minutes, and would go back up by seven (31-24) with 10:32 remaining.
  • Holy Cross then went on a 15-5 run to pull in front, and led 39-36 after two free throws by Karl Charles with 4:24 on the clock.
  • Navy scored the next six points to re-claim the lead, before Charles hit a three-pointer with 1:35 left to tie the game at 42-42.
  • But Kiernan’s three-pointer would give the Midshipmen the lead for good, and Navy made all four of its free throws in the final 20 seconds to pull out the victory.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders hit just 32.6 percent of their field goal attempts and 23.8 percent of their three-pointers on the night.
  • The Midshipmen only made 34.8 percent of their shots from the floor, but held a 42-23 rebounding advantage and a 21-13 edge in free throw attempts.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander finished the game with 11 points and two steals, while Charles added 10 points, four assists and three rebounds.
  • Kiernan led Navy with 18 points and nine rebounds.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The 91 total combined points by the two teams were the fewest ever in a Patriot League Tournament game involving Holy Cross.
  • The Crusaders totaled 12 steals on the night, marking the 16th time this season they reached double figures in steals.
