(Riverside Sports Complex) The Lead: Holy Cross came up short to UC Riverside by a score of 9-8 in the first game of their series with the Highlanders on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Holy Cross responded in the second as junior Thomas Russosingled to center field to bring home senior Bill Schlich.
UC Riverside put together a strong second inning, scoring four runs on five hits to make it a 5-1 game.
In the top of the third, the Crusaders added a pair of runs off RBIs from junior Cam O'Neilland freshman Alex Volpi.
The Highlanders added two runs in the fourth, and another in the fifth to give them an 8-3 lead.
Holy Cross cut the deficit again in the sixth, as senior Josh Hasselland freshman Austin Masel each registered RBIs as the Crusaders posted two runs on three hits.
After the Highlanders posted another run in the sixth to make it 9-5, the Crusaders posted three runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to make it a one run game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Both teams registered 12 hits each.
The Crusaders and the Highlanders each left nine runners on base.
Senior Phil Reesetook the loss for the Crusaders on the mound, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits.
Angel Landazuri earned the win for the Highlanders, allowing five runs through six innings pitched.
Five different Crusaders registered multiple hits, while O’Neill and Masel tied for the team lead with a pair of RBIs each.
Holy Cross continues its weekend series with UC Riverside tomorrow, March 5, as they face the Highlanders in game two at 4:00 p.m. eastern time.
