Men's Lacrosse Defeated By No. 8 Army West Point

The Lead: Nate Jones scored three goals for the Black Knights as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 8 Army West Point, 10-4, in Worcester on Saturday afternoon. Senior Marc Buermann led the Crusaders with two goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Army jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Jones and Avery Littlejohn each found the back of the net in the first quarter.
  • Junior Henry Lilly kicked off the Crusaders’ scoring just 14 seconds into the second quarter, bringing the score to 2-1.
  • After the Black Knights posted two consecutive goals, Buermann scored and cut their lead to 4-2 with 7:51 left in the second quarter.
  • With 3:28 left in the second quarter, Littlejohn netted a second goal, giving Army a 5-2 lead at the end of the half.
  • Army had a four-goal streak to start the third quarter, before junior Matthew Fischetti netted a goal for the Crusaders with 4:09 left in the quarter. The Black Knights took a 10-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Just under two minutes into the fourth quarter Buermann scored his second goal of the day and the only goal of the quarter, for the 10-4 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted eight saves, while Army goalkeeper A.J. Barretto posted 10 for the win.
  • Army West Point outshot Holy Cross, 32-22.
  • The Black Knights picked up 34 ground balls, while the Crusaders tallied 26.
  • Holy Cross won seven face-offs, while Army secured 10.
  • The Crusaders went 0-4 on extra-man opportunities, while the Black Knights were 1-2.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Lilly scored his first collegiate goal.
  • Buermann entered the game with the eighth longest scoring streak in the nation. After today’s game against Army he has now scored at least one goal in the past 14 games.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, March 21, when they travel to Providence, R.I. to face Brown at 7:00 p.m.
