The Lead: Matt Rees had three goals for the Midshipmen as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to Navy, 11-4, on Sunday in Patriot League action. Senior Jon Vogel led the Crusaders with two goals and an assist for three points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead with 13:10 left in the first quarter when Vogel found the back of the net off an assist from senior Sean Kirkpatrick on a man-up goal.
The Midshipmen then went on 7-0 streak, including two goals by Chris Hill, to end the first half at 7-1.
Navy opened up the second half with a goal by Rees to put the Mids up 8-1.
Holy Cross quickly responded with two straight goals from Kirkpatrick, off an assist from Vogel, and senior Jack Ortlieb off an assist from freshman Sean Mullaney.
Navy started the fourth quarter with three straight goals, including two straight from Rees.
Vogel netted his second goal of the game with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter for an 11-4 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted 13 saves, while Navy goalkeeper Ryan Kern posted six for the win and Nick Ramsey secured one.
Navy totaled 30 shots, while Holy Cross took 29.
The Midshipmen picked up 33 ground balls, while the Crusaders tallied 21.
Navy won 16 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured three.
The Crusaders went 1-1 on extra-man opportunities, while the Midshipmen went 0-1.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
Kirkpatrick now leads the team with 24 points.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 8, when they travel to Patriot League opponent Lafayette at 1:00 p.m.
