The Lead: Senior Mary Patalita posted a hat trick for the Crusaders, while Audrey Walsh also netted a hat trick for the Bison as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team fell to Bucknell, 11-8, in a Patriot League matchup on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sarah Galzerano scored the first goal of the game to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the contest.
The Crusaders answered only 1:24 later when Patalita found the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.
Bucknell then responded with two goals by Maddy Molinari and Courtney Burke to take the lead with 25:56 left in the first half.
At 11:59, freshman Maggie Moriarty notched a goal into the net, and just 43 seconds later, scored another, tying the game at 3-3. Senior Maddie Ward and sophomore Baker Earl assisted Moriarty’s two goals.
Senior Tess MacKay gave the Crusaders a 4-3 lead when she netted a goal with 6:11 left to play until the half with an assist by Ward.
Galzerano scored for Bucknell to tie up the game 4-4 with 4:06 left in the half. The score would remain tied at halftime.
Holy Cross took a 6-4 lead in the second half as Patalita scored just 29 seconds into play, followed by a goal by MacKay with an assist by Ward with 28:48 left in the second half.
Bucknell responded with six unanswered goals to move out to a 10-6 advantage with 13:05 remaining in the second half.
Holy Cross ended Bucknell’s streak with a goal by Earl to make it a 10-7 contest with 9:26 left.
After Walsh netted her third goal of the game with 4:36 remaining in the second half, Patalita also netted her third goal of the game just 1:22 later to cut the Bucknell lead to 11-8.
The Crusaders were unable to find the back of the net again for the 11-8 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Holy Cross outshot Bucknell, 26-20.
Junior Julia Maloney made four saves for the Crusaders, while Jamie DeWitt posted nine saves.
Holy Cross secured 12 draw controls, while Bucknell had eight.
Holy Cross picked up 19 groundballs, while Bucknell picked up 15.
The Crusaders went 3-6 on free position shots, while the Bison went 4-7.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
Patalita now has three career hat tricks.
Senior Anna Johnson now has a team-best of 40 draw controls this season which are ranked 10th all-time in program history for a season.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 8 at when they host Loyola Maryland in a Patriot League matchup on Senior Day.
PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS TO BE HONORED:
April 8th will be a special day for the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse program as it will be honoring the senior class and recognizing the accomplishments of the 2006 and 2007 Patriot League Championship teams.
Before the Crusaders’ game against Loyola (Md.), the team will be honoring its senior class for their hard work on and off the field over the last four years. Then at halftime, the 2006 and 2007 Patriot League Championship teams will be recognized on the field for their accomplishments. In the evening, alumni, family and friends will have the opportunity to gather in the newly renovated Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex for a cocktail reception. The day will conclude with a dinner, celebratory program and silent auction in the Loyola Ballroom. The evening will be an opportunity to connect with the current players, coaches, alumni and parents, and to share your memories of the program. Go here to register.
