Baseball Splits With Navy To Close Series Monday

GAME ONE

Score: Navy 6, Holy Cross 1

The Lead: Holy Cross was defeated by Navy in game one of its doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Northborough, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Midshipmen got off to a strong start, adding three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.
  • Navy made it 4-0 in the top of the third before Holy Cross responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from freshman Austin Masel to get on the board.
  • Navy extended its lead to 6-1 in the top of the sixth, adding a pair of runs on two hits to help secure the final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both teams registered seven hits in the first game.
  • Navy left four runners on base, while Holy Cross left five.
  • Senior Joe Cravero took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits through 5.2 innings.
  • Kyle Condry earned the win for Navy, allowing one run on seven hits.

The Lead: Holy Cross tallied five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull ahead of Navy and earn an 8-7 win in game two of Monday’s doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as senior Anthony Critelli notched an RBI double to score Masel.
  • The Midshipmen responded with a run in the top of the third to tie the game up.
  • Critelli lead off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot home run to left field, giving Holy Cross a 2-1 advantage.
  • Navy took a commanding 6-2 lead in the fifth inning, adding five runs on four hits.
  • After senior Alex Voitik hit a solo home run in the seventh, the Crusaders surged into the lead in the eighth, notching five runs on four hits. Critelli and sophomore Kellen McCormick both registered RBIs before junior Cam O'Neill registered a three-run homer to give the Crusaders an 8-6 lead.
  • The Midshipmen added a run in the ninth inning, but the Crusaders ended the game with a double play as runners were on first and third looking for the tying run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Navy outhit the Crusaders 11-9.
  • The Midshipmen left seven runners on base, while Holy Cross left three.
  • Senior Justin Finan earned the win, allowing one run on three hits through four innings.
  • Jacob Williamson took the loss for Navy, allowing two runs on a pair of hits.
  • Critelli went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Critelli’s home run was his fifth of the season, and the 21st of his career. He is now tied for second all-time in program history for career home runs.
  • O’Neill’s home run was his fifth of the season, and the seventh of his career.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross is scheduled to return to action tomorrow, April 4, as Holy Cross hosts Boston College in Worcester at 4:35 p.m.
