Baseball Takes Two From Lehigh On Sunday

The Lead: Seniors Ben White and Justin Finan held Lehigh to two hits and no runs, while senior Josh Hassell scored the winning run to give the Crusaders a 1-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game remained scoreless for the first three innings. Lehigh centerfielder Chris Kersey kept the score tied with a catch on the warning track in the bottom of the third inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Hassell hit a triple to center field. Freshman center fielder Austin Masel then lined an RBI single to center field to drive in the run and give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
  • With one out in the top of the seventh and Lehigh’s Patrick Donnelly on third base, Finan forced Lehigh’s Jeff Shanfeldt to pop out to first and David Young to fly out to right field to secure the 1-0 win for the Crusaders.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders had five hits in game one, while the Mountain Hawks had two.
  • Holy Cross left five runners on base, while Lehigh left three.
  • Finan earned the win for Holy Cross, allowing two hits and no runs in 3.2 innings pitched.
  • White did not allow any hits or runs in 3.1 innings pitched.
  • Levi Stoudt took the loss for the Mountain Hawks, allowing one earned run on five hits in six innings pitched.

GAME TWO

Time: 3:26 p.m.

Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field)

The Lead: Senior catcher Alex Voitik hit his second home run of the season as the Crusaders defeated Lehigh, 7-3, in the second game of the afternoon doubleheader to win the series 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Voitik blasted a two-run homer to left field.
  • The Mountain Hawks cut the Crusaders' lead to 2-1 when Jacen Nalesnik hit a home run over the left field fence.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded, senior left fielder Bill Schlich drove in two runs with a hit to right field to increase the Crusaders' lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Then Hassell doubled down the left field line bringing in two runs and Masel doubled to right field driving in one run for the 7-1 lead.
  • The Mountain Hawks responded in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left field by Kersey to make it a 7-2 game.
  • Then in the ninth inning, John Scarr sent a homer over the right field fence to make the score 7-3. But the Mountain Hawks were unable to score again for the 7-3 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outhit Lehigh 9-6.
  • The Crusaders left four runners on base, while Lehigh left five.
  • Senior Joe Cravero earned the win as he pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
  • Cole McManimon took the loss for Lehigh, allowing four runs on five hits.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Cravero notched a new career-high with nine strikeouts in game two.
  • Voitik's home run was his second of the season, and the eighth of his career.

 UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will return to action on Wednesday, April 12 when it travels to Kingston, R.I., to take on Rhode Island at 3:30 p.m.
