(Freshman Field) The Lead: Junior third baseman Mandy McCarthyled the Crusaders at the plate, batting .667 (2-for-3), but the Holy Cross softball team suffered an 8-0 setback to Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at home in game three of its weekend series.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross went down 2-0 early on in the game, as the Mountain Hawks took the lead in the top of the first inning, scoring both their runs on a single hit up the middle by Carolyn Wright.
Lehigh added two more runs in the top of the third and fifth innings to move out to a 6-0 advantage. The Mountain Hawks did their damage using two hits, an error and a sacrifice fly in the third inning before scoring on an error and single hit up the middle by Rachel Timberman in the fifth inning.
Holy Cross got runners on base in the bottom of the fifth inning after freshman right fielder Sydney Burrhit an infield single and sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held walked with two down, but the Mountain Hawks found the final out of the inning to maintain its lead.
Lehigh then scored the final two runs of the game to lengthen the gap to 8-0, as Wright notched her second RBI single of the day that scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
The Crusaders battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning with singles hit by sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler and McCarthy, but Lehigh found the last out of the game on a fielder’s choice play to claim the 8-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Lehigh led 8-5 in hits.
Holy Cross left five runners on base, while the Mountain Hawks left eight base runners stranded.
Held threw for the first five innings, allowing three earned runs and holding a 4.20 ERA to take the loss for the Crusaders.
Christine Campbell pitched five innings for the Mountain Hawks, allowing just three hits to earn the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
McCarthy has notched at least one hit in the past 15 of 17 games played, while Wahler has recorded at least one hit in the past 13 of 15 games played.
Held pitched 12 innings throughout the weekend, holding a 2.92 ERA.
McCarthy batted .571 (4-for-7) during the three games over the weekend, leading the team with four hits and a .571 slugging percentage. Over the past six games this week, she’s batted .471 (8-for-17) with two RBIs, a home run and a .647 slugging percentage. She currently leads the team with a .365 batting average this season.
Three additional Crusaders including Wahler (.444), senior center fielder Kylee Malouf(.375) and Burr (.375) joined McCarthy in batting over .300 this weekend.
Holy Cross continues its home action on Wednesday, April 19 for a 5:05 p.m. game against Maine at Freshman Field.
