(Eaton Street Field) The Lead: Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster, sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahlerand senior right fielder Kylee Maloufeach led the Holy Cross softball team at the plate with two hits, as the Crusaders outhit Colgate 9-4 and picked up a 3-1 game three win on Sunday afternoon to claim the 2-1 weekend series victory over the Raiders.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both sides played strong defense through the first two innings, as the game remained locked at 0-0.
Then in the top of the third inning, senior second baseman Emily Krisanda put the Crusaders ahead 1-0 with a solo home run shot to center field.
Holy Cross expanded out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Brewster and Wahler each notched base hits to start the inning before junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy and junior first baseman Taylor Mosseach picked up the RBIs on back-to-back fielder’s choice plays.
Colgate narrowed the gap to two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and got the bases loaded with two outs, but sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held struck out her final batter looking, as Holy Cross held onto the 3-1 victory and won the weekend series, 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Holy Cross led 9-4 in hits.
Holy Cross left nine runners on base, while the Raiders left seven base runners stranded.
Held pitched her sixth complete game of the season, tallying seven strikeouts with a 1.00 ERA to earn the win.
Jessica Hay pitched the first four innings and allowed two earned runs to take the loss for Colgate.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Krisanda leads the team with three homers this year, as she hit her fourth career home run.
Wahler led the Crusaders at the plate this weekend, batting .364 with four hits, four runs, four RBIs, two extra-base hits and a .727 slugging percentage.
Krisanda batted .333 this weekend (3-for-9) with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a .778 slugging percentage.
Held has thrown six complete games on the year. Over the weekend, she notched a .093 ERA through 15 innings pitched for two wins and 17 strikeouts, as she held the batters she faced to a .132 batting average.
Holy Cross returns to action in Worcester when the Crusaders play host to Siena for a doubleheader at Freshman Field on Tuesday, April 25 starting at 3:05 p.m.
