Baseball Clinches Patriot League Tournament Bid With Two Wins Over Bucknell

The Lead: With Bucknell leading 2-0 after three innings, Holy Cross answered with 11 straight runs as the Crusaders defeated the Bison 11-2 in the first game on Sunday afternoon.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bucknell posted the first run of the game in the top of the first inning when, with the bases loaded, Danny Rafferty scored on an error to give the Bison an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Bison increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning when Rafferty scored on a fielder’s choice.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning, senior Bill Schlich was hit by a pitch, driving in sophomore Kellen McCormick to make the score 2-1.
  • Then, senior Josh Hassell hit an RBI single to drive in two runs and give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead. Two batters later, senior Anthony Critelli hit an RBI double down the third base line to drive in two more runs and give the Crusaders a 5-3 lead.
  • Senior Alex Voitik kept the offense rolling with a two-run home run over the left field wall to increase the Crusader lead to 7-2.
  • Junior Thomas Russo hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to drive in freshman Austin Masel and make the score 8-2. Then, the Crusaders scored two more runs on a throwing error, increasing their lead to 10-2.
  • Shortly after, junior Cam O'Neill hit an RBI single to left field to drive in freshman Jared Enders and give the Crusaders an 11-2 lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Crusaders outhit the Bison 13-4.
  • Holy Cross left eight runners on base and Bucknell left six runners on base.
  • Senior Justin Finan earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing no runs and only one hit in 4.2 innings pitched.
  • Jeff Gottesman took the loss for Bucknell, allowing six earned runs on four hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

The Lead: O’Neill hit two home runs for five RBIs as Holy Cross defeated Bucknell 14-6 in the second game on Sunday.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bucknell earned the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when JohnPaul Bell hit an RBI double to drive in Keifer Rawlings to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
  • Then, Bell scored on a wild pitch to increase the Bucknell lead before Evan Madigan scored on an error to give the Bison a 3-0 advantage.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, junior Thomas Russo scored on a fielder’s choice to make the score 3-1. Then, O’Neill scored on a wild pitch as the Bison led 3-2.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Critelli hit a RBI single up the middle to drive in Masel and tie the score at 3-3.
  • Then, O’Neill hit a three run home run to left center to give the Crusaders a 6-3 lead. Shortly after, Schlich hit an RBI single to center field to drive in freshman Chris Rinaldi and increase the Crusader lead to 7-3.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Russo hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Critelli, making the score 8-3.
  • O’Neill hit his second home run of the game with a two-run shot over the left field fence, giving the Crusaders a 10-3 lead.
  • Hassell hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to drive in McCormick and increase the Crusader lead to 11-3. Soon after, Masel singled through the right side and drove in Rinaldi as the Crusaders capped off a five-run inning and took a 12-3 lead.
  • In the top of the eighth, a three-run homer by Luke Johnson cut the Crusader lead to 12-6.
  • The Crusaders responded with two runs as Rinaldi recorded an RBI triple and then scored on a throwing error to make it 14-6.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holy Cross outhit Holy Cross 13-8.
  • The Crusaders left 10 runners on base, while the Bison left six.
  • Senior Joe Cravero earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched.
  • Jack Grabek took the loss for the Bison, allowing six earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With two wins on Sunday, Holy Cross clinched its third-straight Patriot League Tournament berth.
  • Voitik’s home run in game one was his fourth of the season, and the 10th of his career.
  • O’Neill notched a pair of home runs in game two to give him eight for the season and 10 for his career.
