Crusaders Earn First-Ever PL Tournament Win With Victory At Navy

The Lead: Senior Kevin Lux tallied two goals and four assists for six points, while senior Sean Kirkpatrick posted four goals and one assist for five points as the No. 5 seed Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 4 seed Navy, 11-7, on Tuesday night in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals. This is the Crusaders’ first-ever victory in the Patriot League Tournament. Holy Cross advances to the semifinals, where is will take on No. 1 seed Loyola (Md.) on Friday, April 28, at 4:30 p.m., in Baltimore, Md., at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders netted the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead with 8:56 left in the second quarter as Lux, junior Logan LeBlond and Kirkpatrick each found the back of the net.
  • Navy’s Dave Little then ended the Crusaders’ scoring streak with a goal with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter and the Crusaders took a 3-1 lead to the half.
  • After Lux netted his second goal of the game, Greyson Torain found the back of the net to cut the Crusader lead to 4-2 with 9:44 left in the third quarter.
  • Senior Jon Vogel then gave the Crusaders a 5-2 advantage but a goal by Ryan Wade made it a 5-3 contest with 2:44 left in the third quarter.
  • Little made it a one-goal game with his second goal of the contest 24 seconds later, but the Crusaders responded with a goal by Kirkpatrick with just 3.5 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • With 12:50 left in the fourth quarter, Torain cut the Crusader lead to 6-5, but freshman Sean Mullaney posted a goal for a 7-5 lead with 9:15 left.
  • Then two goals by Kirkpatrick and one by senior Jack Ortlieb gave the Crusaders a 10-5 advantage with 5:41 left.
  • Goals by Little and Jack Ray cut the lead to 10-7 with 4:27 remaining.
  • But Mullaney’s second goal of the contest increased the lead to 11-7 with 3:10 left.
  • The Crusaders were able to keep the Midshipmen from scoring again for the 11-7 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted six saves to earn the victory, while Ryan Kern made 11 saves for Navy.
  • Holy Cross totaled 35 shots, while Navy took 30.
  • The Crusaders picked up 33 ground balls, while the Midshipmen tallied 31.
  • Navy won 13 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured eight.
  • The Crusaders went 2-3 on extra-man opportunities, while the Midshipmen went 0-3.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • This is the first Patriot League Tournament win in program history for the Crusaders.
  • This is the Crusaders’ second-ever win over Navy, as the Midshipmen now lead the all-time series 13-2. Holy Cross previously defeated Navy by a 7-5 score on March 17, 2013 at Citi Field.
  • The hat trick for Kirkpatrick is the seventh of his career. He leads the team with 30 goals this season.
  • With his six points, Lux now has 115 career points with 65 goals and 50 assists.
  • This is the Crusaders’ second appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. Last year, Holy Cross qualified for the tournament for the first time in program history.
