Crusaders Fall To #17 Loyola Maryland In PL Semifinals

The Lead: The No. 5 seed Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to No. 1 seed Loyola Maryland, 13-3, on Friday afternoon in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the first quarter went scoreless, the Greyhounds netted the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead with 5:50 left.
  • Senior Kevin Lux then ended the scoring streak by finding the back of the net to put the Crusaders on the scoreboard with 4:38 remaining in the second quarter.
  • But just 38 seconds later, Alex McGovern scored the last goal of the quarter as the Greyhounds took a 4-1 advantage to the half.
  • Senior Sean Kirkpatrick posted the first goal of the third quarter with 12:18 left to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 4-2.
  • But two straight goals by McGovern increased the Greyhound lead to 6-2 with 4:16 remaining. Then Pat Spencer found the back of the net with 1:43 left as Loyola took a 7-2 lead to the fourth quarter.
  • The Greyhounds scored the first six goals of the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 13-2.
  • Senior Jack Ortlieb netted the last goal of the game with 1:45 left for the 13-3 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted 13 saves, while Jacob Stover made 12 saves to earn the victory.
  • Loyola totaled 26 shots, while the Crusaders took 12.
  • The Greyhounds picked up 34 ground balls, while the Crusaders tallied 23.
  • Loyola won 12 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured eight.
  • The Crusaders went 0-2 on extra-man opportunities, while the Greyhounds went 1-3.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • This was the first-ever Patriot League Tournament semifinal appearance by the Crusaders.
  • The victory over Navy in the quarterfinals on April 25 was the first Patriot League Tournament win in program history for the Crusaders.
  • This was the Crusaders' second appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. Last year, Holy Cross qualified for the tournament for the first time in program history.
