Softball Picks Up Two Wins Over Bucknell At Freshman Field

The Lead: Junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy went 2-for-2 at the plate, notching two RBIs, as the Holy Cross softball team captured a 4-3 game one victory over Bucknell at Freshman Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game remained scoreless through the first two innings before the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning using two hits. Senior second baseman Emily Krisanda doubled to right center field before McCarthy brought her home on a base hit up the middle.
  • Bucknell then responded with three hits in the top of the fourth inning to match Holy Cross' run and tie the game at 1-1.
  • The score stayed locked at 1-1 until the Crusaders broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, as McCarthy picked up her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly hit to center field, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 edge.
  • Holy Cross brought the momentum into the bottom of the sixth inning and moved out to a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded, sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster reached on a fielding error and brought in freshman right fielder Sydney Burr, while junior catcher Savannah Young also crossed home plate on the play.
  • Bucknell battled back in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly, one hit and two errors, but the Crusaders found the outs to hang onto the lead and claim the 4-3 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders were led by McCarthy who had two hits and two RBIs.
  • Holy Cross led 6-5 in hits.
  • Holy Cross left eight runners on base, while Bucknell left seven base runners stranded.
  • Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held pitched a complete seven innings, holding a 1.00 ERA with five strikeouts to earn the win.
  • Lauren Lichtenwalner pitched through 2.1 innings in the middle of the game, allowing two earned runs to take the loss for Bucknell.

The Lead: Junior first baseman Taylor Moss went 1-for-2 at the plate and notched the game-winning RBI for the Holy Cross softball team, as the Crusaders edged Bucknell, 2-1, to take game two of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both sides played strong defense through the first two innings, as the game remained tied at 0-0.
  • Bucknell then took the lead in the top of the third inning and held it through the next two frames, tallying one run on a sacrifice fly hit by Paulina Gutkin.
  • The Crusaders answered in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases and scoring two runs on two hits to take the lead. Senior left fielder Kylee Malouf singled through the left side before Brewster walked. each of them then advanced to second and third base, respectively, on a wild pitch. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler picked up the first RBI on a fielder's choice play, as Moss drove in the game-winning run on a single lined to left field to give the Crusaders the 2-1 edge.
  • Junior pitcher Katy Watson retired the following six consecutive batters faced with McCarthy diving to catch a line drive for the final out of the game, as the Crusaders earned their second win of the day.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hits were 4-3 in favor of Holy Cross.
  • Holy Cross left seven runners on base, while the Bison left five.
  • Watson threw a complete seven innings with a 1.00 ERA and three strikeouts, holding her batters faced to a .120 batting average to earn her second win of the season.
  • Lara Bean pitched the first 4.1 innings and took the loss for Bucknell.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Freshman designated player Sydney Behrens made her first two career appearances.
  • Holy Cross has come out on top in the past three games against the Bison.
  • The Crusaders are now tied with Bucknell for fourth place in the Patriot League. The top four teams will advance to the Patriot League Tournament.
  • Moss notched her 64th career RBI, which ranks 10th all-time in the program's history. She has driven in 22 runs to lead the team this season.
  • Krisanda had two doubles today and is on a six-game hitting streak. She has batted .389 over the past six games with a .722 slugging percentage.
  • Wahler has notched at least one hit in the past 10 of 11 games played, batting .316 during this span.

  • Holy Cross returns to action for its third game of the series against Bucknell tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. at Freshman Field.
