Baseball Splits With Lafayette Saturday

GAME ONE

Score: Lafayette 8, Holy Cross 7

Location: Easton, Pa. (Kamine Stadium)
The Lead: Lafayette scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, helping lead them to an 8-7 victory over the Crusaders in game one Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders got off to a strong start in the top of the first, adding two runs on three hits as Seniors Bill Schlich and Anthony Critelli registered RBIs.
  • The Leopards responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Lafayette added another run in the third, before scoring four more in the bottom of the fourth to give them a 7-2 lead.
  • Holy Cross added two runs in the fifth inning, as freshman Austin Masel hit a two-run homer to right center.
  • The Leopards added another run in the fifth to make it 8-4 in their favor.
  • In the top of the seventh, Holy Cross added three runs on three hits. Junior Cam O'Neill and sophomore Kellen McCormick (2) registered RBIs to bring in three runs, but the Crusaders were unable to complete their comeback.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both teams registered nine hits in game one.
  • Holy Cross left nine runners on base, while Lafayette left four.
  • Senior Brendan King took the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits.
  • Kyle Johnson earned the win, allowing two runs on one hit in two innings.

The Lead: Holy Cross scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, leading them to an 8-7 victory in game two Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, as Schlich brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
  • Lafayette made it 3-1 in their favor, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third.
  • In the next half inning, Holy Cross added three runs to make it a 4-3 game. Schlich, McCormick and senior Josh Hassell each brought home runners.
  • The Leopards added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to give them a 5-4 lead.
  • Holy Cross regained control of the lead in the top of the ninth, adding four runs on two hits to make it 8-5. Critelli, McCormick and senior Alex Voitik brought home runners, while Critelli scored off an error.
  • Lafayette added two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but they were unable to tie the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outhit Lafayette, 12-11.
  • Holy Cross left 11 runners on base, while the Leopards left eight.
  • Senior George Capen earned the win, allowing no runs through 3.2 innings pitched.
  • Senior Jon Escobar earned the save, holding the Leopards to two runs in the final inning.
  • Mark Anderson took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Masel's home run was his fourth of the season.
  • Escobar earned his first save of the season, and the sixth of his career.
  • Capen improved to 4-0 on the season.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will return to action tomorrow, April 30, as the Crusaders wrap up their series with Lafayette beginning at 12:05 p.m.
