Women's Track And Field Breaks Three School Records At Patriot League Outdoor Championship

The Lead: Junior Zoe Matherne and senior co-captain Alexa Eldracher each set individual school records, while the 4x100-meter relay team of sophomores Isabella DiMare, Sarah Friess and Alexandra Curtin, as well as freshman Allie Smiley re-set the 4x100-meter relay record for the Crusaders, as the Holy Cross women's track and field team finished sixth place at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Breaking a record for the fourth time this year, Matherne took first place in the 800-meter run after bettering her former all-time record time with a mark of 2:08.05. Her first place finish totaled 10 points for Holy Cross. Matherne earned first team All-League accolades for winning the 800-meter title.
  • Eldracher, the Crusaders' current record holder in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump, also bettered her former historical standard with her distance of 11.96 meters, as she landed in fourth place overall. Eldracher's performance scored five points for the Crusaders.
  • The 4x100-meter relay team of DiMare, Friess, Curtin and Smiley re-set their record-breaking time from the Skyhawk Invitational with their new time of 46.44, as the squad recorded six points for Holy Cross with a third place finish.
  • Senior Alliyah Veilleux placed fourth in the hammer throw with a career-best and New England qualifying distance of 50.12 meters.
  • DiMare also reached a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:03.30 for an eighth place finish in the finals. She also placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 14.71 seconds.
  • Senior co-captain Rachel Sowinski ran a season-best time of 4:41.10 in the 1,500-meter run to take sixth place and bring in three points for Holy Cross.
  • Qualifying for the New England Outdoor championship in the 5,000-meter run was junior Elizabeth Lombardo who registered a personal record time of 17:59.33.
  • Junior Alanna Hitscherich finished fifth in the triple jump with her distance of 11.59 meters.
  • After qualifying for the finals in day one, Curtin ran for fifth place in the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.46.
  • Bucknell won the meet with 194.5 points.

UP NEXT:

  • The women's track and field team returns to action from May 12-14 for the New England and ECAC Outdoor Championships.

TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The track and field Patriot League Outdoor Championship served as part of the second annual Turnpike Trophy competition where Holy Cross and Boston University square off throughout the year. Boston University now holds a 19-1 lead.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The Turnpike Trophy series continues on May 12-14, when the men's and women's rowing teams face one another.
