Baseball Advances To Patriot League Championship With Two Wins Over Army West Point

GAME ONE

Score: Holy Cross 8, Army West Point 2

Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field)
The Lead: Junior Cam O'Neill hit a three run home run and senior Josh Hassell recorded three RBIs as Holy Cross defeated Army West Point, 8-2, in game one of the Patriot League Semifinals on Saturday afternoon in Worcester.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • O'Neill hit a three-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning to drive in senior Bill Schlich and freshman Austin Masel to give the Crusaders an early 3-0 lead.
  • Hassell increased the Crusader lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to center field to drive in freshman Chris Rinaldi.
  • With runners on second and third thanks to a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kellen McCormick, Hassell hit an RBI double to left center field to drive in junior Thomas Russo and senior Alex Voitik and increase the Crusader lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Shortly after, Schlich hit an RBI single to left field to drive in Hassell and give the Crusaders a 7-0 lead.
  • Senior Anthony Critelli hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh inning, making the score 8-0.
  • Army's Trey Martin hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the eighth inning to put the Black Knights on the board. Then, shortly after, Kris Lindner hit an RBI single to drive in David Monge and make the score 8-2.
  • The Black Knights loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning, but the Crusaders were able to hold on to the lead and secure an 8-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outhit Army West Point 9-6.
  • The Black Knights left six runners on base, while the Crusaders left five.
  • Senior Brendan King earned the win for Holy Cross, allowing four hits and two runs in seven innings pitched.
  • Jacob Carte took the loss for Army, allowing seven hits and seven runs in four innings pitched.

Time: 2:30 p.m.
Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field)
The Lead: Holy Cross scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat Army West Point by a score of 5-4 in game two of the semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams started out strong on the defensive side of the ball, playing through three and a half scoreless innings.
  • Army West Point broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single to make it 1-0.
  • The Crusaders tied the game up in the top of the sixth as Schlich led off the inning with a solo home run to center field.
  • Army West Point added two runs on one hit in the sixth, then increased its lead with another run in seventh to make it 4-1 in their favor.
  • Holy Cross stormed back in the eighth inning, notching four runs on two hits to take the 5-4 lead. Critelli brought a pair of runs home with a single through the right side before Russo brought home a runner on a fielder's choice and Critelli scored off a throwing error.
  • Senior George Capen helped to close out the game in the final two innings, notching five strikeouts and forcing the final out of the game with an infield pop-up.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both teams registered eight hits in game two.
  • Army left 11 runners on base, while the Crusaders left six.
  • Capen earned the win for Holy Cross, allowing one run on four hits.
  • Blake Walters took the loss for Army, allowing four runs on two hits.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders advance to the Patriot League Championship for the fifth time in program history.
  • King tied his season-high with eight strikeouts in game one.
  • O'Neill's home run in game one marked his team-leading ninth of the season.
  • Critelli's home run was his seventh of the year, and 23rd of his career.
  • Schlich hit his fourth home run of the season, marking the ninth of his career.
  • Prior to the start of the games, Masel was presented with the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award.

  • Holy Cross advances to the Patriot League Championship series, and will take on No. 4 seed Bucknell. The Crusaders will play host to the Bison at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field on Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20. Game one will take place at 5:05 p.m. on Friday, followed by game two on Saturday at 12:05 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will take place 30 minutes following the conclusion of game two.
