Baseball Falls To No. 1 Oregon State At Corvallis Regional

The Lead: The Crusaders fell to No. 1-ranked Oregon State in their first game at the Corvallis Regional on Friday night at Goss Stadium.

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Oregon State put two men on base with one out in the bottom of the first inning, but the Crusaders ended the inning with a double play to keep it a 0-0 game.
  • The Beavers were first to get on the board, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Holy Cross responded in the fifth, as freshman Chris Rinaldi brought home senior Alex Voitik with an RBI single through the left side.
  • Oregon State had a strong offensive push in the sixth inning, tallying three runs on two hits to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Beavers would notch two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to make it 8-1 in their favor as the game headed to the ninth inning.
  • The Crusaders added a run in the top of the ninth, as sophomore Kellen McCormick brought home freshman Jared Enders with an RBI single to left field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Beavers outhit Holy Cross 13-6.
  • Oregon State left seven runners on base, while the Crusaders left nine.
  • Senior Brendan King took the loss, allowing five runs in 5.1 innings pitched while tossing four strikeouts.
  • Jake Thompson earned the win for the Beavers, allowing one run in 7.2 innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Senior Anthony Critelli broke the school record for career doubles with his 53rd in the sixth inning.
  • This was the first NCAA Tournament game for the Holy Cross baseball team since 1978.
  • The Crusaders faced Oregon State for the first time in program history.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action tomorrow in Corvallis, as they face No. 25 Nebraska in an elimination game at 4:00 p.m. eastern time.
