PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Holy Cross volleyball team went 1-1 on the second day of the 13th Annual Friar Classic hosted by Providence. The Crusaders defeated the Rider Broncs 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24) and fell to the St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers 3-2 in a five set battle (23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-12). Freshman libero Sophie VanSeveren and junior middle hitter Kristen Somerville were each named to the All-Tournament team. The Crusaders finished 1-2 in the Friar Classic and Providence went 4-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman outside hitter Katie Kerins notched a her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 18 digs.

  • Freshman setter Kathleen Philo posted her fourth double-double of the season with 18 assists and 13 digs.

  • VanSeveren led the Crusaders with 24 digs and recorded 65 digs through the three tournament matches.

  • Somerville tallied seven blocks for the third time this season and also had 12 kills (.393 hitting percentage).

  • Freshman outside hitter Emmerson Smith had 19 digs and seven kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders took the lead 20-18 in the first set after a kill by Somerville, but the Broncs came back to win the first set 25-23.

  • Holy Cross went on an 8-0 run halfway through the second set to make the score 18-10. The Crusaders were able to close the second set 25-17 after kills by Smith, Kerins and senior middle hitter Mary Mullen.

  • With a strong lead at 19-11, the Crusaders controlled the rest of the third set and won 25-17.

  • Despite falling behind the Broncs 10-4, Holy Cross worked back to tie the fourth set 18-18. With the set tied later at 24-24, freshman middle blocker Clare Honan notched a kill to put the Crusaders up 25-24. Holy Cross was able to secure the set 26-24 and the 3-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sophomore outside hitter Alessandra Vasquez recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs.

  • Smith also notched her first career double-double with 10 kills and 21 digs.

  • Honan posted a career-high 14 kills and four blocks.

  • VanSeveren led the Crusaders with 25 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set was close between both teams. The Crusaders were down 20-16, but scored four straight points, with two kills by Honan, and trailed the Terriers 20-19. A kill from Vasquez tied the set at 21-21. Holy Cross scored the final four points and won the set 25-23.

  • The second set had six ties, but the Crusaders were able to pull away to a 18-13 lead after a kill by Vasquez. Holy Cross captured the second set 25-20.

  • Holy Cross and St. Francis kept the third set tight until the end. A kill by Honan put the Crusaders one point behind the Terriers at 22-21. After an error from Holy Cross, St. Francis (N.Y.) was able to win the third set 25-21.

  • St. Francis carried their momentum from the third set into the fourth, and led the Crusaders 19-14. Two kills in a row by Somerville and Vasquez brought the score to 19-16. However, the Terriers took control and scored the last four points of the set to win 25-18.

  • The fifth set was tied 10-10 after a kill from Kerins. St. Francis (N.Y.) controlled the last two points with an ace and a kill to secure the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
