Washington, D.C. – The Holy Cross volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the George Washington Tournament Sept. 15. The Crusaders lost the first match against George Washington 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19) and lost the second match against the Univeristy of Maryland, Baltimore County 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-13).

Freshman outside hitter Katie Kerins led the Crusaders with eight kills, 10 digs and four blocks agianst the Colonials.


  • The first set went back and forth between the Crusaders and Colonials. Freshman middle blocker Clare Honan tied the set 12-12 with an ace. Junior middle hitter Kristen Somerville brought Holy Cross within one point after a kill assisted by freshman setter Shannon Dwyer making the score 14-15. The Colonials kept the lead, however, and won the set 25-19.

  • The Colonials broke away from the Crusaders in the second set after a kill by Kelsey Clark making the score 17-11. George Washington captured the set, limiting Holy Cross to only 16 points.

  • Holy Cross kept the third set close and tied it 14-14 after a service error by George Washington. Holy Cross could not hold on though, and the Colonials scored the last four points straight, taking the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

  • Kerins led the Crusaders once again with 14 kills and 15 digs recording her third double-double of the season.

  • Freshman libero Sophie VanSeveren tallied 22 digs.

  • Freshman setter Kathleen Philo led the Crusaders with 16 assists.


  • After dropping behind 7-3, the Crusaders came back to tie the first set 11-11 from a kill by Honan. The Crusaders kept the lead the rest of the set and won 25-18.

  • Holy Cross came within one point of UMBC after a kill by Honan making the score 9-10 in the second set. Later, UMBC jumped to a 23-16 lead after an attack error by Philo. The Retrievers controlled the set and won 25-19.

  • The Retrievers came back in the third set after trailing the Crusaders 7-4. With an attack error by junior middle blocker Allie Barry, UMBC took the lead 9-8. The Retrievers dominated the remaining rallies and scored the last four points taking the set 25-14.

  • Holy Cross fell behind UMBC 7-19 after a kill by Ashley Ramos. The Retirevers were able to finish the set 25-13 and won the match 3-1.  


  • The Crusaders face Delaware in the third match of the GW Tournament tomorrow, Sept. 16 at 12:00 p.m.
