KINGSTON, R.I. – Junior forward Jehyve Floyd totaled 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Rhode Island 88-66 at the Thomas M. Ryan Center. The Crusaders fall to 2-1 on the season with the loss, while the Rams improve to 2-1 overall.

Holy Cross hit 47.2 percent of its field goal attempts and 38.1 percent of its three-pointers, but also had a season-high 17 turnovers. Rhode Island was able to make 55.4 percent of its shots from the floor and 43.8 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc, while committing just nine turnovers.

Freshman guard Caleb Green recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career, finishing the day with 14 points, 11 assists and five rebounds. Junior guard Matt Zignorski added 10 points, while hitting three of four shots from three-point range. Jared Terrell led the Rams with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • Following the contest, Floyd was selected also as the Man of the Match presented by the United States Marines.
  • He posted new career highs for both points (14) and rebounds (eight), while hitting six of eight field goal attempts.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Rhode Island opened the game by jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead after the first 3:21 of action.
  • The Rams would go on to lead by eight (23-15) with 11 minutes left in the first half, before Holy Cross used an 11-2 run to claim its first lead of the day (26-25).
  • The score stayed close for the remainder of the half, before Rhode Island took a 40-37 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Rams held on to a small lead early in the second half, and were up by just five (62-57) with 8:27 left to play.
  • Rhode Island then went on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to take control of the game.
  • The Crusaders would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way, with the Rams going on to post a 22-point victory.

  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Green recorded new career highs for points (14), assists (11) and rebounds (five).
  • Freshman forward Connor Niego made his collegiate debut, posting nine points and three rebounds.
  • Junior forward Karl Charles did not play in the game due to injury.
