Crusaders Earn Series Sweep With Two Wins Over Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Holy Cross baseball team earned a pair of wins over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon to cap off a 3-0 weekend in Charleston, S.C. This marked the first series sweep for the Crusaders over the Bucs, having gone 1-2 in 2010 and 1-3 in 2014 against CSU.

GAME ONE 

Peter Dudunakis batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to help lead the Crusaders’ (5-8) offense. Sophomore Austin Masel also put together a strong performance, hitting 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Kellen McCormick batted 2-for-4 and posted an RBI, while sophomore Riley Livingston and senior Thomas Russo also crossed the plate for Holy Cross. Mike Sconzo led the offense for Charleston Southern (6-11), batting 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Junior Declan Cronin earned the second win of his career, as he allowed two unearned runs on six hits through 7.2 innings while throwing three strikeouts. Junior Danny Barlok posted the second save of his career, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Ryan Stoudemire took the loss for the Bucs, allowing two runs in 4.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Charleston Southern got the scoring started early in the first inning, adding a pair of runs off one hit to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Holy Cross responded in the fourth inning, adding a pair of runs on three hits to tie the game. Dudunakis hit an RBI single to score Masel, while McCormick brought home Livingston with a single.
  • In the first at-bat of the sixth inning, Dudunakis hit the first home run of his career with a solo shot to center field.
  • Masel also hit one over the fence in the seventh inning, marking his third of the season to make it 4-2 Crusaders.
  • The Bucs got two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, but Barlok notched a strikeout to end the inning and keep Holy Cross in the lead.
  • Russo added the fifth run for the Crusaders in the ninth, scoring on a throwing error from third base.

GAME TWO

Masel put together a stellar outing in game two, batting 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Russo also scored a pair of runs while hitting 2-for-5 at the plate. Livingston went 2-for-4 in the game and added a run scored, while Dudunakis and junior Alex Gionis also crossed the plate once for Holy Cross. Kyle Vesnesky led the offense for Charleston Southern, batting 3-for-4. 

Sophomore Zane Hedaya earned his second win of the season, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings of relief while allowing one hit. Freshman Garret Keough started on the mound and pitched 4.2 scoreless innings while tossing five strikeouts. Tyler Weekley took the loss for the Bucs, allowing six runs through six innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders got off to a strong start in the first inning, as senior Cam O'Neill brought home Masel with a double to left field.
  • Holy Cross added three more runs in the third inning, as Masel notched his second home run of the day and hit fourth of the season with a three-run blast to right field.
  • Charleston Southern threatened to score with the bases loaded in the fourth, but Keough and the Crusaders’ defense forced the final batter to fly out and end the inning.
  • In the sixth inning, Holy Cross posted a pair of runs as sophomore Colton Hector singled to bring home Dudunakis and Masel.
  • The Crusaders added two more runs in the seventh, as Gionis scored following an error and Russo found his way home on a sacrifice fly by O’Neill.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, March 13, as the Crusaders take on Boston College on the road at 3:00 p.m.
