The Holy Cross football team will be back in action this Saturday, Sept. 22, when it plays host to Dartmouth at 1:05 p.m. The game between the Crusaders and the Big Green will be televised live by Charter TV3 and the Patriot League Network, and can be heard live on WEEI 1440 AM in Worcester.
Saturday will be Worcester School Day, where Worcester public school officials will be recognized for their contributions to the community throughout the game. It will also be Youth Day and all kids under the age of 12 will receive free admission, while the Goodtime Marching Band, cheer and dance teams will be joined by some talented kids from the Worcester community for a joint performance. In addition, the first 500 fans to enter Fitton Field will receive free drawstring bags sponsored by Central One Federal Credit Union.
Holy Cross stands 1-2 so far this year, with an 0-1 mark in Patriot League play. The Crusaders are coming off a 31-28 overtime victory over defending Ivy League champion Yale, in which they rallied from 14 points down in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Geoff Wade has led the Holy Cross offense by completing 23 of 38 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns this season. Junior running back Miles Alexander has added a team-high 154 rushing yards and a score on 35 carries, while senior wide out Blaise Bell has caught 13 passes for 123 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Ryan Brady leads the team with 40 tackles, two quarterback sacks and nine tackles for loss. Brady currently ranks sixth in the nation in tackles and ninth in tackles for loss. Sophomore defensive back Joe Lang has added 24 tackles and two quarterback sacks, while senior defensive back Corey Stefanik has 12 tackles, a quarterback sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Dartmouth stands 1-0 so far this year, after defeating Georgetown 41-0 in its season opener. The Big Green ran up 453 yards of total offense against the Hoyas, while their defense allowed just 112 yards and forced four turnovers. Sophomore quarterback Derek Kyler hit on 15 of 21 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown, in addition to rushing four times for 22 yards and a score. Senior tailback Rashaad Cooper added 16 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown, while senior wide receiver Drew Hunnicutt caught four passes for 102 yards and a score. Senior linebacker Jack Traynor led the Dartmouth defense with five tackles, including two tackles for loss. The Big Green is led by head coach Buddy Teevens, who is in his 19th season at Dartmouth. Teevens owns an overall record of 87-91-2 with the Big Green.
Saturday's game will be the 81st all-time meeting between the teams, with Dartmouth leading the series 39-37-4. The Big Green has won three straight and five of the last seven games between the schools
After the contest with Dartmouth, Holy Cross will remain at home to face Bucknell as part of Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1:05 p.m.
